Overview of redox reactions in the ER. Nascent polypeptide chain enters the ER through Sec61. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) can introduce disulfide bonds into nascent polypeptide chains and becomes reduced in the process. PDI can be oxidised by Ero1 or possibly directly by GSSG. Reduced PDI can help isomerase non-native disulfide bonds. GSH keeps PDI reduced, becoming oxidised in the process. Adapted from Chakravarthi et al., 2006
